Teach your kids to use AI safely, creatively & well
Each rung has what's developmentally appropriate, what to actually do together, and the guardrails that keep it honest and safe.
AI is a tool a grown-up drives. Kids watch, ask, and wonder — never alone at the keyboard.
- Co-pilot an illustrated story: your child dictates, you prompt, you read it back together.
- “Ask the robot” jar — collect a child's big questions and explore answers side-by-side.
- Make-believe vs. real: practice spotting when a picture or voice was made by a computer.
- Sing & rhyme generators — turn a spelling list into a silly song to memorize.
Guardrails: Adult always at the keyboard. No accounts for the child. Frame AI as “a tool that sometimes gets it wrong.”
AI becomes a study buddy — used with a parent nearby and a rule: check what it tells you.
- Socratic tutor: AI asks your child questions instead of giving answers (use the prompt pack).
- Fact-check race: ask AI a science question, then verify it in a real source — who's right?
- Reading-comprehension partner: paste a passage, have AI quiz your child.
- Build a quiz: your child becomes the teacher and has AI grade their answer key.
Guardrails: Supervised sessions. Teach the phrase “AI can sound sure and still be wrong.” Never share real names, addresses or photos.
Kids use AI to make things — and start learning how it actually works and where it fails.
- Build a simple chatbot in Scratch or Poe and give it a personality.
- Prompt-engineering lab: change one word, see how the answer changes — keep a notebook.
- Bias hunt: ask AI to describe “a scientist” or “a nurse” 10 times; discuss the patterns.
- Research with citations: AI drafts an outline, your child finds & verifies every source.
Guardrails: Introduce hallucinations, bias and data privacy explicitly. Set an honesty rule: AI-assisted work is disclosed, never copied as their own.
Teens use AI like a professional would — as a thinking partner they direct, question, and outgrow.
- Use AI as a debate sparring partner that argues the opposite side.
- Essay coach: AI critiques structure & logic but writes none of the words.
- Learn to build: call an AI API, make a small app, or fine-tune a prompt system.
- AI ethics seminar: deepfakes, academic integrity, jobs, and what AI can't do.

Parent Prompt Packs
Open any AI assistant, paste a prompt, fill in the [BRACKETS]. These are built to make AI teach — asking questions, coaching, and quizzing — instead of just handing over answers.
You are a patient Socratic tutor for a [GRADE] student learning [TOPIC]. Never give the answer directly. Ask one guiding question at a time, wait for my child's reply, and adjust to their level. Keep it warm and encouraging.
Here is a passage for a [GRADE] reader: [PASTE TEXT] Ask my child 5 comprehension questions one at a time — a mix of recall, inference, and vocabulary. After each answer, give gentle feedback and the page-anchored reason.
Explain [CONCEPT] to an 8-year-old using a simple everyday analogy, then ask one question to check they understood. Avoid jargon. If they get it wrong, try a different analogy.
Create a [NUMBER]-question quiz on [TOPIC] for a [GRADE] student. Mix multiple-choice and short-answer. Put the answer key at the very end so we can cover it. Make two questions a little challenging.
My child wrote the draft below. Do NOT rewrite it. Point out 3 things working well and 3 specific things to improve (structure, clarity, evidence). Then ask one question that would make the next draft stronger. [PASTE DRAFT]
Build a 45-minute lesson on [TOPIC] for a [GRADE] student. Include: a hook, one hands-on activity using common household items, 3 discussion questions, and a quick way to check understanding. Keep it screen-light.
I'm a high-school student. Take the opposite position from me on: [CLAIM]. Argue it well and make me defend my view. After 4 exchanges, step out and tell me which of my arguments were weakest and why.

The six things every kid should know about AI
Read these together. They're the difference between a child who uses AI and a child who isn't used by it.
Hallucinations are normal
AI invents facts, citations and quotes that sound real. The rule in this house: if it matters, verify it in a real source.
AI is biased
It learned from the internet, so it carries the internet's stereotypes. Ask it the same thing several ways and notice the patterns.
Privacy is non-negotiable
Never type real names, addresses, school names, photos or secrets. Anything you paste may be stored.
Honesty over shortcuts
AI-assisted is fine when you say so. Passing AI's words off as your own is cheating — and you learn nothing.
Seeing isn't believing
Voices, faces and videos can be faked. Teach kids to ask “could a computer have made this?”
Don't outsource your thinking
AI is a bicycle for the mind, not a wheelchair. Use it to go further, not to avoid the climb.
